We are pleased to announce that we already have in our clinic the first prototype of the European project IMA: “Intelligent Motion Analysis – Development of a novel technology that makes quantitative measurement of musculoskeletal problems available, in the interests of physiotherapists, patients and society «.
Since October 2012, the members of the project have worked hard to develop this technology based on the requirements and needs proposed by physiotherapists from several European countries. IMA project team is formed by three associations of physiotherapists, three R&D institutes and 2 physiotherapy clinics including Fisioterapia Maritim in Valencia and a company that develops equipment for the analysis of movements:
• Asociación Española de Fisioterapeutas (Spanish Physiotherapists Association).
• Felag Sjukrathjalfara (Icelandic Physiotherapists Association).
• Koninklijk Nederlands voor Genootschap Fysiotherapie (Dutch Association of Physiotherapists).
• Innovation Center Iceland (R&D Centre, Iceland).
• Intelligent Systems Research Institute (R&D Centre, United Kingdom).
• Institute of Biomechanics of Valencia (R&D Centre, Spain).
• Fisioterapia Marítim (Physiotherapy Clinic, Spain).
• Sjukrathjalfun Islands (Physiotherapy Centre, Iceland).
• Kine (Company developing technology for the analysis of movement, Iceland).
On April 15, the “IMA team » met in Madrid at the Spanish Association of Physiotherapists to review the status of the project and deliver the prototype Lirios Dueñas, Silvia Mena and Daniel Alonso, physiotherapists in the clinic Fisioterapia Maritim in Valencia.
Over the coming months, we will proceed to the measurement of patients in our facility to validate the IMA technology. This tool will allow us to study the muscle activation and movement of the shoulder joint, hip and knee. Using the IMA tool, physiotherapists will have a fast, portable and easy to use method to enable a quantitative and objective assessment of patients with musculoskeletal disorders, obtaining data from movement and muscle activity of the patient to guide and monitor the evolution of rehabilitative therapies.
On the other hand, the Institute of Biomechanics of Valencia is taking measurements with healthy subjects from January 2015 to design a database. These measurements will continue until the end of June and they are expected to measure a large sample of subjects of both sexes and various age groups.
In addition, the Icelandic physiotherapy clinic Sjúkrapjálfun Íslands, will have another prototype for measuring patients with shoulder, knee and hip pathology.
This period of measures aims to validate the functional assessment protocols of patients with musculoskeletal injuries and identify pathological movement patterns of the shoulder, hip and knee. It will include the development of functional indicators, based on the registration of the muscle activity and joint motion for functional assessment of patients.
The use of this technology is a breakthrough in the field of assessment and treatment planning in physiotherapy since it will provide objective information on the movement and muscle activation easily, quickly and at low cost .
In addition, Fisioterapia Marítim collaborated in the review and adaptation of the measurement procedures in order to adapt them to the needs of physiotherapy clinics. The aim is to integrate in the daily practice of professionals these instrumental measurement techniques in order to improve the quality of treatment offered to patients.
The participation of Fisioterapia Maritim Clinic in the IMA project will allow us to integrate the use of the latest technology in the field of assessment and treatment to offer our patients a better service.
This project receives funding from the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Union managed by the Research Executive Agency REA http://ec.europa.eu/research/rea (FP7 / 2007-2013) under grant agreement n ° 315551 FP7-SME-2012.
